Where Angel Numbers Come From

Numerology — the practice of assigning symbolic meaning to numbers — has roots in several ancient traditions, most notably the teachings attributed to the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, who taught that numbers underpin the structure of the universe itself. Modern "angel number" culture, which reads repeating digits (like 111 or 444) as personal spiritual messages, is a newer, popularized offshoot that blends numerology with New Age spirituality. It gained particular momentum from writer Doreen Virtue's work in the 2000s and has since spread widely through social media.

How Root Numbers Work

Most numerology traditions reduce multi-digit numbers down to a single digit between 1 and 9 (with 11, 22, and 33 sometimes treated as special "master numbers") by adding the digits together repeatedly. For example, 2024 becomes 2+0+2+4 = 8. That final digit is treated as the number's "root," carrying a consistent meaning no matter how it first appeared — in a birthday, an address, or a repeating sequence on a clock.

A Quick Note

Numerology is a belief system and a reflective tool, not a scientifically established practice, and none of the content on this site should be treated as financial, medical, legal, or professional advice. Many people find real personal value in using these numbers as a prompt for reflection — that's the spirit in which this site is offered.

Who Writes This Site

Angel Number Guide's number pages and guides are written and edited under the pen name Alison Rieman. Alison Rieman is a pen name, not a separate person: the site is written and run by its independent owner, who prefers not to publish under their own name. We mention it plainly here because a byline should never imply credentials or a biography that do not exist.

What the byline does stand for is a consistent editorial approach: set out what the numerology traditions actually say, be clear about where each reading comes from and how old it really is, keep checkable facts checkable, and say plainly where evidence is lacking. Every page lists its sources, and corrections are welcome at any time through the contact page.
