What Is Numerology?
A beginner's guide to angel numbers, root numbers, and where these traditions come from.
Where Angel Numbers Come From
Numerology — the practice of assigning symbolic meaning to numbers — has roots in several ancient traditions, most notably the teachings attributed to the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, who taught that numbers underpin the structure of the universe itself. Modern "angel number" culture, which reads repeating digits (like 111 or 444) as personal spiritual messages, is a newer, popularized offshoot that blends numerology with New Age spirituality. It gained particular momentum from writer Doreen Virtue's work in the 2000s and has since spread widely through social media.
How Root Numbers Work
Most numerology traditions reduce multi-digit numbers down to a single digit between 1 and 9 (with 11, 22, and 33 sometimes treated as special "master numbers") by adding the digits together repeatedly. For example, 2024 becomes 2+0+2+4 = 8. That final digit is treated as the number's "root," carrying a consistent meaning no matter how it first appeared — in a birthday, an address, or a repeating sequence on a clock.
